The Gelli Plate is a tool that encourages play!  Join us as you learn to create amazing prints loaded with layers of color and design.  Prints can be just one layer, or have layer after layer building up the pattern and color to create 1-of-a-kind papers! We will explore printing many colors in a single “pull” of the plate, layering colors one “pull” at a time to build unique and interesting designs. We will use commercial stencils, and also learn to make our own stencils for more personalized designs. We will discuss color theory and composition, and use everyday objects to create textures. Lastly we will explore ways to hand color a finished print, and ways to use “junk” prints for other mixed media projects. The possibilities are endless with this versatile printmaking technique!

Frank Lloyd Wright became a great architect by using his love of nature’s colors and shapes in his ground-breaking designs. This unique camp will take place at Windy Knoll Farm in Nokesville and in the Center’s Computer Lab. Students will learn about Wright’s life and vision as they directly experience the powerful inspiration of the natural world. Art activities will explore the hidden geometric shapes within nature and various works of art. Experimenting with different art media, students will learn to illustrate 3–D forms, depicting objects in proportion. The incorporation of symmetry, asymmetry and pattern will be studied and applied to both architectural and abstract forms of art.

We will discover “technical tricks” with different tools: palette knives, butter knife, razor blade, plastic credit cards, and learn to make corrections by lifting out, washing out and sponging out already painted surfaces. Class may be taken multiple times; subject matter will vary among a variety of landscapes, seascapes, florals and still-life. Watercolor paper will be provided by the instructor.
