What do you know about cartooning? Join our mini-camp and improve your character illustration skills and personal style. We will look at eastern and western comics, and then use hand drawing, digital tablets, and cartooning software to illustrate a page, just like the professionals!


Ages 13-18

Improve your skills in creating original anime characters with fully developed traits, motivations, and potential story arcs.  We will go over different drawing techniques to help build your character’s look and context, and finish with designing dynamic page layout compositions to showcase your scene. Traditional hand-drawing and inking methods will be featured in the workshop.  Course fee includes $10 supply fee.

What’s behind Manga & Anime? Why are these so popular? We will look at Japanese cartooning, learn a bit about the history & techniques and apply our skills into making creative and original Japanese frame-boards. Hand drawing and digital tablets may be utilized with a variety of widely accessible software programs, including Krita™, Manga Studio™, Paint Tool Sai™, and MediBang Paint Pro™.  Course fee includes $20 supply fee.

What are the tools and techniques of cartoon drawing? Join this class and improve your ability to take a rough sketch to a finished cartoon using hand drawing media or digital tablets, as you choose. We will develop a cartoon character-based narrative and create pages of pictures and words to tell a story.  Course Fee includes tuition and supply fee.

Improve your photographs and/or drawings with technology! Learn how to artistically transform images – with the use of computers and digital drawing tablets, creative possibilities are endless. We’ll start the session in our Historic Manassas neighborhood; students may photograph or sketch as they choose. We will manipulate our digital files with Adobe Photoshop and other widely accessible software programs in the Center’s computer lab. Using images created during class or from the students’ own body of work we will make compelling new compositions. Phone & tablet cameras welcome. This introductory class is suitable for ages 11 to adults. Enrollment limited to 8 students. Tuition includes $15.00 supply fee.
