Arts on the Go

Arts on the Go

"Art is the queen of all sciences communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world" ~Leonardo Da Vinci

*Winner of the 2011 Agnes L. Colgan Community Services Award*

Welcome to The Center for the Art’s 11th year of Arts on the Go, created by the Center’s staff, along with module designers Eric Vasey, DK Stewart, & Thomas Hannon, and academic consultants Nancy Pallo and Karen Moffitt.  Arts on the Go is fully integrated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education modules.

Currently, Arts on the Go consists of four self-contained interactive exhibits, each with a distinct theme. Three modules (Habitats, Biomes Around the World and Energy Matters) have been designed for use in elementary schools, and one module (PowerUP!) has been created for middle school students.  And coming in 2017, a new middle school module (The Periodic Table).  The materials and exercises presented within the modules reflect and reinforce grade-level specific Standards of Learning (SOLs) in STEAM subjects as well as language arts.  The Habitats module explores the natural environments of organisms and species populations for 1st-3rd grade and the Biomes Around the World explores the nine biomes of the world for 4th-6th graders. The Energy Matters and PowerUP! modules both present curricula and issues related to the importance of energy sources, uses, and conservation.

Each of the modules is a multi-faceted mobile interactive exhibit, providing a unique platform for understanding science through hands-on, creative lessons and activities. The modules will cycle through schools in Prince William County,  Manassas City and Manassas Park for the 11th consecutive year through a cooperative partnership between the Center for the Arts and the program’s sponsors, NOVEC, Micron, and SPARK. The Center has updated the teacher support materials for all modules to include new activities and corresponding digital files for SMART board presentation. Through a recent grant from the Edward T. Bedford Foundation,  we built the new Biomes Around the World module and the new Periodic Table module will be release in early 2017 thanks to assistance from NOVEC.  Our goal is to enrich the curriculum through multiple learning style activities that complement classroom science lessons while enhancing understanding of the visual arts.

How to Participate in Arts on the Go

Each school will host a module for approximately 10 school days. Interested schools should contact Candace Penders at the Center to schedule a module for the 2015-16 school year. Approximate measurements for each modular system are included in the following summaries.

Habitats Module for Elementary Schools

1. Producers & Consumers – Ecological symbiosis and diversity presented in two diorama displays
2. Flower Power – Flower parts studied in soft sculpture floor puzzle & silk flower arrangements
3. Virgin Forest floor puzzle – The beauty of a rainforest interpreted by Master artist Henri Rousseau
4. Illustrating a Food Chain – Connections drawn for four habitats through crayon rubbings
5. My Footprint on a Healthy Earth – Group mural will depict community conservation commitment
6. Positive/Negative Impact Activity – Discussion and game inspired by book The Great Kapok Tree

Instructions and materials for each activity are in the module’s supply chest.
